Environmentally friendly rice

Mrs. Im Sarim, farmer in Peak Bang Oang village in Takeo province of
Cambodia, holds up a rice plant, of traditional variety (Hamath) grown from
a single seed with SRI methods. She harvested 333 kg of paddy from 500
square meter field, a yield of 6.72 tons per hectare, more than three times
the national average. In some parts of her field, the yield reached 11 tons
per hectare. |

In November 2004, a 3km 2 Marine Protected Area was established at the southern end of the i sland of Nosy Hao. Local fisherman act as guardians of the no-take zone, which serves the dual purpose of a nursery ground and safe haven for marine species, while at the same time providing a local tourist attractions. |
